UAE Events Calendar: Drums, Hollywood & 80s Acts – Entertainment – Events

From classic movies to retro club nights, there’s a lot going on in the UAE this week. Read on to find out more.

FILTER
The Abu Dhabi Film Festival is a good opportunity to watch the best international films while catching up with the latest news from Arab filmmakers. The event, which runs until October 23, features more than 170 films. Highlights include the French film “Carlos” by Olivier Assayas, portraying the famous Venezuelan revolutionary who was once the world’s most wanted terrorist; “Potiche” by François Ozon, with French actress Catherine Deneuve; “Miral” by Julian Schnabel, featuring an actual orphanage created by a Palestinian woman in Jerusalem; and “Certified Copy” by Abbas Kiarostami. Expect to spot plenty of Hollywood and Bollywood actors!

TO LAUGH
This month’s comedians tasked with making the UAE laugh are Gordon Southern, Michael Fabbri and Tim Clark (not to be confused with the Emirates Airline Chief!). Southern is a familiar voice on television and has performed everywhere from Kosovo to the Falkland Islands, while Fabbri, a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, tackles dark and controversial topics. Clark’s show, “What I Heard About Iraq,” earned him rave reviews and he wrote for Jonathon Ross, among others.
Or: At Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi, on Yas Island, Tuesday; followed by concerts in Dubai at Jambase, Madinat Jumeirah, the Courtyard Marriott at the Green Community and the Rainbow Room at the Aviation Club for the rest of the week. BOYS
After tours through Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Abri, nominated for the MTV Europe Music Awards, returns home with a touching set in Dubai on Wednesday. The Dubai-based band is a powerful mix of vocalist Hamdan Al Abri, keyboardist Julian Symes, bassist Rami Lakkis and drummer Andre Atherley. He shared the stage with Kanye West, Mika, Joss Stone, Ziggy Marley, Arrested Development, Timbaland, Shaggy and Kelly Rowland and Abri is known for his ability to produce moving music that instantly resonates with audiences, producing a powerful mix of soul, jazz and R&B.

GO TO RETRO
Two great British bands from the 80s are bringing a bit of retro to the UAE concert scene this weekend. New Wave group The Blow Monkeys, perhaps best known for their song “You Don’t Own Me” from the movie “Dirty Dancing”, join pop-soul group The Christians (“Ferry Cross The Mersey”, n ‘ anyone?) in Abu Dabi and Dubai.
Or: They play at the Crowne Plaza Yas Island on Thursday night, followed by a concert at the Irish Village on Friday. Dh100 and Dh95 tickets respectively.

CLUB
Eduard Marian Ilie, former Eurovision contestant and number one on the charts, heads to Dubai on Thursday for a 45-minute set at Chi @ The Lodge. The DJ responsible for the hit song “Stereo Love” (do you remember it now?) Will be ably supported by DJs Smoking Groove, Danny Neville and Emtee.
