Some fans and critics have likened “Squid Game” to “Fall Guys”

Netflix’s South Korean survival drama sees 456 people, all struggling with debt, thrown into a mysterious competition filled with children’s games. The winner of the tournament receives 45.6 billion yen ($ 38.5 million). However, there is a death trap: those who are eliminated from the games will die. Each death adds 100 million yen to the grand prize. The stakes are incredibly high, so contestants must form alliances to survive.

During this time, fall guys has a similar but much lighter concept: players control bean-like characters competing in a series of battle royale mini-games for a grand prize at the end. Numerous Squid game fans and critics who also played fall guys immediately made connections between the two, from concepts to bright pink and blue color schemes. These guards dressed in a pink jumpsuit in Squid game look amazingly like pink beans in fall guys.

Due to the similarities, many fans of the series and the video game have called for a crossover. fall guys has crossed paths with several other pop culture entities since its release in 2020, so the idea isn’t totally out of the ordinary.

“Don’t worry, I’m just sitting here patiently waiting for the crossover @FallGuysGame #SquidGame, Squid Guys”, one Twitter user wrote.

“Who would be down for a fall guys X Squid game crossing? Me, who is it, another user added.

Mediatonic has not yet confirmed Squid game X fall guys crossover, but the Netflix show certainly inspired the developer. Talk to TechRadar on the future of video games, lead designer Joe Walsh explained that fall guys almost made his own version of Red Light, Green Light. However, the team were concerned that the concept might not translate well into a video game. The idea is to run towards the finish line when the caller says “green light” and to stay as still as possible when he says “red light”.

“In a video game, there’s something about movement,” Walsh said. “[I]In real life, it’s very difficult to stay still, but in a video game, all you have to do is put down your controller. And so, at the time, I think we were like, “We’re never gonna do Red Light, Green Light, that doesn’t make sense.”

Squid game confronting Red Light, Green Light has become an iconic representation of the series, inspiring Mediatonic to reconsider its idea.

“Seeing how Squid game is that I would love if we had another chance in something like this and see if we could make it in fall guys“, added Walsh.

“Fall Guys” was inspired by many game shows

Squid game influence on fall guys isn’t too surprising, given his other inspirations. Walsh said television had a big impact on the battle royale, especially game shows. He told TechRadar:

Really the inspiration for this is Takeshi Castle (MXC in the United States) and Total erasure. It’s A Knockout for people who are maybe a little older. And these game shows are so amazing. I spent my childhood watching and loving them, and I always wondered what it would be like to be on these shows. And that was really the genesis of fall guys. I think that’s what makes it so unique is that it’s the only game to take inspiration from this area. I think that has been a big reason why it has been so successful.

Squid game is available now on Netflix. fall guys is currently playable on PC and PlayStation 4. Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S versions are coming soon.
