The Armageddon Game event coming in 2022 • AIPT

IDW revealed that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are hosting an event in 2022 called The Armageddon Game. Written by Tom Waltz with art by Vincenzo Federici, it’s an event that IDW says took more than a decade to prepare.

“It’s an absolute honor and privilege to return to IDW’s main TMNT continuity, and to have the opportunity to do so as the creative lead of a massive, multi-layered event like The Armageddon Game (which bounces into my brain since I walked away after issue 100) is the real icing on the cake,” says Waltz. “I can’t wait for the fans to see what we’ve cooked up. We have a great story to tell and incredible collaborators are joining us to tell it. Let the games begin!”

So what is the Armageddon Game in regards to?

In The Armageddon Game, the Turtles – under the direction of the Shredder – begin a dangerous quest to seek allies against Rat King’s terror trio: LeatherKrang, Baxter Stockman and Madame Null. It’s a mission that will see our heroes spread throughout New York City… and in multiple dimensions! But they better hurry because their enemies are already on the march, and with the Turtles gone, Mutant Town is ripe for false flag attacks, mysterious new villains, and unexpected alliances. The time has finally come to find out who is playing the game… and who is being played!

“When I was seven years old, I decided that I would become a comic book artist when I grew up…and credit for that decision goes to TMNT. I was obsessed with them and still am,” says Federici. “My personal view of TMNT is forged in the television series and films of the 80s and 90s, but I am also inspired by those who have worked on the IDW series from the beginning, such as Mateus Santolouco or Sophie Campbell. In the tradition of these great artists, I will do my best for this series. Readers will be delighted!

The basics for The Armageddon game has been over a decade in the making, beginning with the epic world-building collaboration between Waltz and TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman on the initial series of 100 issues, continuing under the skillful direction of Sophie Campbell in the ongoing series since 2020, and in turmoil more recently with the main storyline in two issues, The Armageddon Game: Opening Moves.

“This story is going to be huge! There is a tonne players (and more than a few surprises), and honestly, that’s just the beginning. When we reach the end of this saga, it will mark the beginning of a whole new era for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Whether you are an avid fan of TMNT or brand new to the party, The Armageddon game is not to be missed,” says editor Charles Beacham.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Armageddon Game #1 will be available in stores with three cover variations, one featuring art by series artist Vincenzo Federici, a second featuring art by the legendary TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, and a retailer-incentive third edition with artwork by Pasquale Qualano.
