The board of supervisors on Tuesday approved increased rates charged to towns outside Riverside County that contract with the Department of Animal Services for animal control and pet pounds.

Animal Services Director Julie Bank submitted to council a request for “full cost recovery” directly related to the accommodation and processing fees of licenses in four municipalities – Colton, Fontana, Grand Terrace and Rialto – which are all found in San Bernardino County.

Last week, supervisors expressed concern when they learned that the Department of Animal Services was likely to lose money in the current fiscal year because the rates were insufficient.

The bank came back with the cost recovery proposal, under which the daily accommodation rate charged to cities will drop from $ 25.80 to $ 31.60, and the processing fee for licensing animals. from $ 10.26 to $ 10.52.

The rate hikes have no impact on the 13 municipalities in Riverside County that contract with the agency.

“The tariffs are necessary to meet the ongoing operational costs associated with providing effective services and essential programs to non-resident Riverside County residents and their animals,” according to documents published on the council’s agenda. . “Full cost recovery… (is) to ensure that the county does not subsidize other public bodies to the detriment of its own operations. “

The Department of Animal Services has been running deficits for most of the past decade and competes with private non-profit entities that also provide animal control and housing services, primarily in the southwestern part. County.

A proposal last year to give the agency animal control in the city of San Bernardino was rejected by the board because cost recovery was in doubt.
