Strong attendance for Fergus Scottish Festival and live Highland Games
There was no shortage of Scottish music, games and other activities at the Fergus Scottish Festival and the Highland Games.
Approximately 26,000 people attended the 2022 edition at the Wellington Center Community Complex over the weekend of August 13.
Everything went smoothly according to the festival’s general manager, Elizabeth Bender.
“All competitions and major pillars such as Heavyweight Events, Highland Games, Pipes and Drums, Clans and Heritage Zone have been incredibly successful,” Bender said. “There was a good display of competitors and everyone was delighted to be back.”

The event also included live appearances by Foreign star Duncan Lacroix and author Diana Gabaldon. It was the Scottish festival’s first live event since 2019.
“There was a part of us that thought, ‘We didn’t know what to expect,'” Bender said. “We were hoping people would come. The best they can do is hold a safe event…and hope everything goes just fine.
The board released a statement saying they wanted to thank all festival guests for supporting the first live festival in three years.
“We are overwhelmed by the kindness you have shown while we sailed, providing you with the best and safest festival experience,” the statement read.
Bender said they have visited other Scottish festivals in the area to get a feel for how they run their post-pandemic live events.
“Some of our volunteers also participate in other Highland Games competitions,” Bender said. “We spoke with their organizers about what went well, the turnout and the mindset.”
The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games 2023 will take place from August 11-13.
