A Department of Animal Services agent used sheets to rescue a kitten stuck in a fireplace, officials said Thursday.

Officer Chris Peck responded to a call on Tuesday about a kitten trapped in a chimney in the Jurupa Valley.

Rudy, a 6-month-old kitten, managed to climb onto the roof and then down the chimney, which had been sealed during an overhaul of the house.

Initially, Peck didn’t have a device long enough to reach the kitten, but he had received sheets, which the officers used as a makeshift rope for the kitten to climb. They went up to the roof and lowered it into the fireplace.

The kitten was found in the backyard early the next morning, having climbed safely.

Officials said if the rope did not work, they would have made a hole in the wall to retrieve the kitten.
