The history of the Edinburgh Highland games

A brief history

The first Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival was held in April 1993, after eight months of planning in the communication courses of Dr Tim Thompson. On a day characterized by typical Scottish weather, a crowd of five hundred people enjoyed two groups of bagpipes, a vendor, children’s games and student sports competitions.

Crowds of five thousand or more now enjoy the annual games which feature an array of competitions, world-class musicians, exquisite gift vendors and the gathering of Scottish clans. Musicians such as master fiddlers Alasdair Fraser and Bonnie Rideout, renowned Braveheart piper Eric Rigler, singer Ed Miller and groups such as Cherish the Ladies, Seven Nations and the Chelsea House Orchestra have delighted audiences for twenty years. . In 2003, the Downtown Edinboro Art and Music Festival was born as part of the Edinboro Highland Games. While the Scottish Festival has since been moved to a September date, the Art & Music Festival continues to flourish as a wonderful tradition each May. The Edinburgh Games now feature sanctioned competitions in professional and amateur athletics, solo bagpipe and bagpipe orchestra and percussion, Highland dance, Celtic and Scottish harp, and US National Scottish Violin Championships. With delicious Scottish and festival food and family reunions, the Edinboro Highland Games has become one of the most unique and interesting cultural events in the Erie-Chautauqua region.
