Music, Celtic Clans, Athletes, Bagpipes and more! The annual Green Hill Highland Games returns for its 12th year on Saturday August 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Watch some of the world’s finest athletes put on the kilt, listen to authentic Celtic music and watch fantastic demonstrations about Scotland’s heritage! The Virginia Highlands Pipes and Drums, the oldest pipe and drum organization in Southwest Virginia, will provide music for the opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and perform throughout the day. Seventeen Celtic clans will be on hand to celebrate Southwest Virginia’s Celtic history and culture.

Public events this year include Celtic dancers and fiddlers, as well as an expanded lineup of music. Joining Green Hill Highland Games again is well-known band SYR, bringing their Celtic Folk Rock to the stage throughout the day. Kinnfolk will also perform, with a style that weaves bouzouki, bodhran and soft vocal harmonies into their Celtic folk music. Many fiddlers and several Scottish dancers from across the state will also bring their upbeat music to the games.

The athletic competition will feature male and female athletes competing in traditional Scottish heavyweight and strength athletics competitions; including Shot Put, Scottish Hammer Throw, Stone Throw and the always entertaining Caber Toss. The athletic competition continues to grow and push the boundaries in the event’s twelfth year with the addition of several international athletes. Spectators are invited to come cheer on all the athletes! The Green Hill Highland Games benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwest Virginia, an organization that provides the Ronald McDonald House, a comfortable and welcoming home for families of ill and injured children who must travel to the Roanoke area for medical care. treatment.
