FLAGSTAFF – Do you hear the pipes?

The Northern Arizona Celtic Festival and Highland Games will be held July 16-17 at Fort Tuthill County Park in Flagstaff. It’s a weekend of culture and art, music and history, clans and kilts, whiskey and incredible feats of strength.

The Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society organizes the festival while Flagstaff Highland Games organizes the athletic competition. Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 17. Games run from 8 a.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Live music will include The Wicked Tinkers, Killian’s Angels, The Knockabouts and the Flagstaff Irish Session Players.

There will be historical demonstrations of weaving, knitting, leatherwork, woodworking, musket drills and swordsmanship. Discover the plants of the Celtic regions or check out the whiskey tastings, beer and food vendors – many other vendors too.

There will also be workshops on genealogy, country dancing, bagpipes, bodhran, musical bones and wheat weaving.

Children can enjoy their own play and craft area.

Tickets are available at the door. Admission is $20 per adult for one day or $30 for both days. There are discounts for military and seniors 60+ ($15/$25). Kids 5-12 get in for $5. Children under 5 enter for free. Well socialized dogs are also welcome.

Meanwhile, Highland athletes will throw cabers, stones, sheaves and hammers. They will try to throw “the weight over the bar” (WOB).
