As the old saying goes, “A good friend knows all your best stories, but a best friend has lived them with you.” Fortunately, finding a loyal and enthusiastic best friend is as easy as visiting Huntsville Animal Services (HAS).

June 8 is National Best Friends Day and HAS celebrates with a $10 adoption fee for most dogs until June 12. The number of dogs at the shelter has swelled and HAS hopes the affordable price could attract those considering adopt a shelter dog.

“Our dogs are fully vetted before they are available for adoption,” HAS Director Dr Karen Sheppard said. “Each dog is spayed or neutered, receives all age-appropriate vaccinations, receives flea and heartworm preventatives, and is microchipped.”

Adopted dogs also receive a municipal license and a free bag of pet food.

Sheppard said the preventative care adds up, but the value of the services is most evident when HAS connects a healthy dog to loving humans in a “furever” home.

“We’re in the business of connecting best friends,” she said. “Nothing beats that feeling of giving a lonely dog a second chance.”

Located at 4950 Triana Blvd. in Huntsville, HAS is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
